| WR Trust - Railways Quiz Earlier this year the WR Trust devised a low-key fun “Railways” quiz to raise money and increase public awareness. The quiz was sold in the Leeming Bar shop and feedback has been positive. It is hoped to have something similar, but more sophisticated and more widely available, on offer next year. The winner of the quiz was 9 year old Megan Dudiak of Stockton-on-Tees, who had visited the railway with her father. The Trust Chairman has written to all who took the trouble to submit entries. The answers to the quiz questions are as follows: 1- 2003; 2- 4472; 3- North Wootton; 4- A.H. Peppercorn; 5- Seven feet; 6- Thomas Bouch; 7- The Vale of Rheidol Railway; 8- Evening Star; 9- King Arthur Class; 10- Garsdale; 11- Stockton and Darlington Railway; 12- Rocket; 13- LNER, LMS, GWR, SR; 14- Mallard; 15- Richard Beeching; 16- Waterloo; 17- Thurso; 18- Ffestiniog Railway; 19- 1890; 20- I K Brunel. | Leyburn Station Platform Fund - Update Click on the button to securely donate to the Leyburn Station Platform Fund In April 2011, the Friends of Leyburn Station (FOLS) launched an appeal to raise funds for the resurfacing of Leyburn Station platform (Phase 1) and the reinstatement of the canopy (Phase 2). Currently, the platform surface is loose and uncompacted; there is no under-platform drainage; and no wet-weather shelter. ![]() The existing platform surface No under-platform drainage means regular Photos: Sandra Ward flooding (September 2011) Phase 1 will involve removal of the existing topping material, provision of new drainage, realignment of the platform edge tactile paving and the laying of a substantial amount of blacktop by specialist contractors. Because of factors beyond the immediate control of the Platform Project Team, it is no longer possible to meet the planned Phase 1 completion date of end 2011 and the work is now unlikely to be achievable before end February 2012, with groundworks commencing in early January 2012 (weather permitting). The existing Phase 1 funding target of some £17,000 is also under review and will require to be supported by updated quotations. In the meanwhile, fundraising continues in earnest. FOLS gratefully acknowledges the most generous donations both of money and goods which have enabled some £8,000 to be realised since the inception of the project and the pledges of varying sums which have been made by third parties. An application for external grant assistance has disappointingly, however, been unsuccessful and leaves the Project Team with a considerable way still to go. If you have not already supported the appeal, it is not too late to make a contribution. Donations to the Leyburn Station Platform Fund may be made:

"Engine Shed for a Tenner" Appeal - Update Click on the button to securely donate to the Engine Shed Appeal Current total is £27,107 as at 25 October 2011 A very big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported the appeal so far. I am delighted to report that we have raised a staggering £12,000 in the first week. This means one thing - we WILL have our shed! If you haven't donated yet please consider helping. The more we get, the better the facilities and the faster we can complete the work. It is particularly important that as the Railway moves up a gear, we can provide well maintained, good lloking trains for our customers. Before too long we may well be working to extend the Railway and maintenance will be even more important. I am also very grateful for the huge number of "good luck" and supportive messages you have sent with your donations. There are a small team of us here at Leeming Bar and Leyburn, paid and volunteers (some people being both!) who do our best to keep the wheels turning and give our visitors a good experience. It is extremely helpful to know that we have so many people out there willing to provide moral and financial support. It make us all the more determined to make the Railway become one of the UK's premier lines. The Wensleydale Railway is very lucky to have you all behind it and, for our part, we will do our very best to justify your support. Thank you once again.
